Arminia Bielefeld Advances to German Cup Final After Upsetting Bayer Leverkusen

The third-division club marks a historic achievement by defeating reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen in a thrilling semifinal match.
Arminia Bielefeld, a team competing in Germany's third division, has reached the final of the DFB-Pokal, commonly known as the German Cup, for the first time in the club's history.

The milestone was achieved through a surprising victory over Bayer Leverkusen, the current Bundesliga champions and holders of the cup, on Tuesday evening.

The match began with Leverkusen taking an early lead, courtesy of a goal from German international Jonathan Tah.

However, Arminia Bielefeld responded decisively, overturning the scoreline with goals from Marius Wörl and Maximilian Grosser.

This victory places Bielefeld among a select group of clubs that have reached the German Cup final while competing in the third tier, being only the fourth team to do so.

The previous clubs to have accomplished this feat are Union Berlin, Energie Cottbus, and Hertha Berlin's reserve team in 1993.

Bielefeld, hailing from North Rhine-Westphalia, currently occupies the fourth position in their division, highlighting the remarkable nature of their cup run.

The team has faced significant challenges on their path to the final, defeating second-division side Hannover 96 in the first round, followed by Bundesliga teams Union Berlin, SC Freiburg, and Werder Bremen, before overcoming Leverkusen.

This marks the first instance of a third-division team eliminating four top-flight clubs consecutively in the tournament's history.

The club's victory elicited reactions from the football community.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, a former German international and current pundit, remarked on the competitive nature of the match, stating he did not perceive a league difference between the two teams on the day of the match.

In contrast, Leverkusen's midfielder Robert Andrich expressed disappointment, calling it the team's worst performance of the season, emphasizing the consequences of not meeting their competitive standards.

Looking ahead to the final, Arminia Bielefeld will compete against either VfB Stuttgart or RB Leipzig, who are set to face each other in the second semifinal on Wednesday.

Stuttgart and Leipzig concluded the previous Bundesliga season in second and fourth places respectively.
