Berlin Commemorates Christo's 'Wrapped Reichstag' as Art and History Intersect

2025 marks significant anniversaries in the legacy of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, celebrating their iconic works across the globe.
Berlin is set to pay tribute to the iconic 'Wrapped Reichstag,' a monumental art installation by Christo and Jeanne-Claude that transformed the landscape of the German parliament in the summer of 1995. This distinctive artwork, which saw the Reichstag enveloped in 100,000 square meters of silvery fabric and 16 kilometers of rope, will be remembered for marking a pivotal moment in contemporary art.

From June 9 to 22, 2025, a light installation will illuminate the west façade of the Reichstag to commemorate its 30th anniversary.

The legacy of Christo and Jeanne-Claude extends beyond this anniversary year.

2025 is also noteworthy as it marks the 40th anniversary of the wrapping of Paris' Pont Neuf and the 20th anniversary of 'The Gates' installation in Central Park, New York.

Both artists would have celebrated their 90th birthdays in 2025, having been born on June 13, 1935.

Christo, born in Bulgaria, fled from the communist regime, moving through Prague, Vienna, and Geneva before settling in Paris, where in 1958 he met the French Jeanne-Claude, who had Moroccan roots.

Together, they formed a creative partnership that yielded ambitious installations aiming to capture public attention through the transformation of familiar structures and landscapes.

The genesis of 'Wrapped Reichstag' can be traced back to 1971, during a period marked by the Cold War.

At that time, the Reichstag was adjacent to the Berlin Wall and symbolized the divided state of Germany.

However, it was not until the Bundestag granted permission in 1994, after extensive debates spanning over two decades, that the vision became reality.

In June 1995, the installation drew more than 5 million visitors over two weeks, transforming the Reichstag into a shimmering spectacle that resonated deeply with spectators.

Attendees picnicked on the lawns, took photographs, and engaged in lively discussions about the artwork's impact, with many noting a newfound appreciation for the historical building.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude intended not to obscure the Reichstag but to offer a fresh perspective on its form, stripping away superficial details to focus on its silhouette and volume.

The temporary nature of the installation—dismantled after two weeks—underscored their philosophy regarding the beauty of ephemerality in art.

The artists often remarked on the significance of enjoying moments that would soon pass.

Although the 'Wrapped Reichstag' exists primarily as a site for public reflection rather than political discourse, many observers interpreted the installation as a symbol of renewal and unity during a transformative period in Germany's history.

This connection deepened in the context of a reunified nation seeking a new identity.

Following the deaths of Jeanne-Claude in 2009 and Christo in 2020, the artists' works continue to resonate through exhibits and memorials, solidifying their contributions to public art.

The upcoming events in 2025 will serve not only as a celebration of their most renowned projects but also as a reminder of the power of art to foster communal experiences and provoke thought in public spaces.
