Christian Lindner Bids Farewell as FDP Leader with Emotional Speech

The outgoing head of the Free Democratic Party reflects on years of leadership and criticizes the new government.
Christian Lindner delivered an emotional farewell speech as he stepped down as the leader of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) during the party's convention in Berlin.

Reflecting on his tenure, Lindner expressed gratitude towards his wife, Franca Lehfeldt, acknowledging the personal sacrifices made during his years in politics.

He stated, "If I was euphoric, you slowed me down.

And if I was depressed, which was more frequent, you lifted me up." Lindner emphasized how his political career impacted his family life, saying he had devoted decades to the FDP at the expense of spending time with loved ones.

During his address, Lindner criticized the new coalition government led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

He asserted that while the recent election signified a desire among voters for a shift towards reduced state intervention and greater individual freedoms, the Merz government was deviating from these expectations by increasing state involvement and debt.

He cautioned that failing to pair fiscal policy with necessary reforms could result in economic repercussions, echoing what he termed a potential "boomerang effect" by the next election in 2029.

Lindner received prolonged applause, nearly five minutes, from delegates, who were visibly moved by his remarks as he reflected on his over eleven years at the helm of the FDP. He described his tenure as a "wonderful journey" and expressed deep gratitude towards the party members.

The new party chair is expected to be Christian Dürr, who previously led the FDP's parliamentary group.

Dürr is set to be elected without opposition during the convention.

Lindner noted that it is now the responsibility of the FDP to propose and advocate for reforms needed by the Merz government to ensure the sustainability of any new debt obligations.

He described the convention as a potential new beginning for the FDP.

The FDP faced a challenging moment in the wake of the 23 February elections, where it secured only 4.3% of the secondary votes, resulting in its absence from the Bundestag for a second time.

This mirrors a previous hiatus from 2013 to 2017, which Lindner had previously navigated by leading the party back into government alongside the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens, a coalition that ultimately collapsed prematurely.

Lindner rejected suggestions for the FDP to alter its positioning in response to the election results, firmly stating that the future of the party does not lie in a shift left or right, but rather in a renewal grounded in its core values.

He stressed the necessity for the party to remain unified in its liberal principles.

Johannes Vogel, the outgoing deputy chair of the FDP, highlighted the party's struggle following the electoral setback, referring to it as a "life-or-death battle." He reassured delegates that, despite its challenges, the FDP remains a living entity, beginning a process of renewal at the convention in Berlin.

Vogel emphasized the importance of resilience, recalling that the party had previously confronted similar obstacles successfully.
