Debate Intensifies Over Asylum Policy in Germany Following BAMF Chief's Remarks

Debate Intensifies Over Asylum Policy in Germany Following BAMF Chief's Remarks

BAMF President calls for abolition of individual asylum claims, prompting backlash from Green Party and demands for action by the Interior Ministry.
Hans-Eckhard Sommer, the President of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), has called for the abolition of individual asylum claims, arguing that the current asylum system is reckless towards German society.

His comments have elicited strong reactions from the Green Party, which is urging the Interior Ministry to consider potential consequences.

Sommer proposed replacing individual asylum assessments with humanitarian admissions based on quotas, a suggestion that has sparked outrage among Green Party leaders.

Konstantin von Notz, a senior member of the party, indicated that questioning fundamental principles of the Constitution may warrant administrative complaints against Sommer.

He alleged that Sommer’s public remarks might infringe upon ongoing coalition negotiations.

The Interior Ministry, which oversees BAMF's professional and legal framework, has been urged to assess Sommer's statements promptly.

Von Notz also noted that factors such as the current transitional state of Interior Minister Nancy Faeser’s role should not impede oversight responsibilities.

Sommer expressed his views during a speech at the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, emphasizing the need for substantial humanitarian admissions instead of individual asylum processes.

He clarified that his remarks reflected his personal opinions and not his official position as BAMF president.

Thorsten Frei, the Parliamentary Managing Director of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, welcomed Sommer's comments as a significant contribution to the asylum debate.

Following Sommer's speech, leading figures from the Green Party and the organization Pro Asyl called for his resignation.

Since taking leadership of BAMF in 2018, Sommer had refrained from making public statements regarding asylum policy.

Interior Minister Faeser responded to inquiries about Sommer's comments by stating that focusing on humanitarian quotas is not a new approach.

However, she expressed concern that this method alone will not effectively address migration issues or the influx of refugees fleeing conflict.

She affirmed that the SPD, her political party, does not intend to compromise on asylum rights.
