Driving Change: Ford Workers Seek Support Amidst Job Cuts

As Chancellor Scholz visits Ford, tensions rise over job security and the future of Germany's electric automotive industry.
In an atmosphere of mounting tension, Ford's workforce in Cologne braces for a crucial visit from Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as the specter of significant job cuts looms.

Ford's employee representatives, led by works council chairman Benjamin Gruschka, are urging the government to implement an electric vehicle purchase incentive, mirroring successful models elsewhere in Europe, to revitalize faltering demand.

Germany’s previous incentives for electric vehicle purchases, which ended in 2023, had provided a substantial boost to sales.

However, in their absence, the market has languished.

The automotive giant is grappling with the consequences of its late transition to electrification, having poured nearly two billion euros into refashioning its Cologne plant for electric vehicle production.

Yet, the timing has coincided with a broader market downturn, exemplified by the sluggish sales of the Ford Explorer, one of its pivotal new offerings.

The announcement last November of Ford's intent to cut approximately 3,000 of its 12,000 jobs in Germany by 2027 has added urgency to the calls for action.

This stark reduction follows a longer-term contraction, with the workforce having already shrunk from nearly 20,000 in 2018.

The works council, alongside IG Metall, is campaigning against these measures, seeking to protect jobs in an industry undergoing fundamental transformation.

Scholz's visit is seen as a symbolic gesture of solidarity by the SPD leader.

Workers hope that despite the SPD-Green coalition lacking a parliamentary majority after the short-lived 'traffic light' coalition with the FDP, the visit will catalyze significant policy initiatives to bolster the electric vehicle market.

Today's agenda includes private discussions between Scholz, Ford’s management, and the works council, followed by a highly anticipated address to the workforce.

Beyond incentives, Ford’s representatives are advocating for the expansion of charging infrastructure and affordable electricity for consumers, crucial components in making electric vehicles more attractive.

Gruschka’s appeal is poignant: "As Chancellor, Olaf Scholz must leverage all available means to support companies like Ford that have committed to the transition to electromobility." He stresses the importance of government intervention, not just to preserve jobs across the automotive value chain, but to advance Germany’s broader energy transition.

Scholz's leadership is being tested as Ford, a microcosm of the industry at large, stands at a crossroads between innovation and economic survival.
