Investigation of Possible Russian Links in Mannheim Knife Attack

Investigation of Possible Russian Links in Mannheim Knife Attack

Court scrutinizes potential connections following a deadly assault that left one police officer dead.
In Mannheim, Germany, a court has announced an investigation into potential links to Russia in relation to a knife attack that occurred on May 31, 2024, which resulted in the death of police officer Rouven Laur.

During the initial proceedings, the presiding judge at the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court ordered the Landeskriminalamt (State Criminal Police) and the Generalbundesanwaltschaft (Federal Prosecutor’s Office) to provide any relevant insights prior to the incident.

The court may also seek information from the Bundesnachrichtendienst (Federal Intelligence Service).

The need for this investigation was underscored by a recent broadcast of the ZDF program 'Terra X History,' which included commentary from an internet profiler about suspicious search activities originating from Russia, using terms that implied potential knowledge relevant to the attack.

However, security sources have raised concerns regarding the reliability of these findings, stating that precise conclusions could not be established from Google Trends data in relation to the timing of the attack.

The accused, identified as 26-year-old Sulaiman A., is alleged to have attacked six individuals during a demonstration by the anti-Islamic citizen movement Pax Europa (BPE), injuring five attendees, along with the police officer Laur, who succumbed to his wounds two days following the incident.

Sulaiman A. reportedly claimed during the trial that he sought validation for his planned assault via the messaging service Telegram.

He mentioned having discussions with a chat partner, who referred to themselves as OR, about the killing of police officers and the concept of Mudschaheddin, which usually denotes fighters affiliated with Islamist groups.

German authorities have been unable to confirm the identity of this individual.

In his testimony, the defendant expressed his growing curiosity about carrying out an act of violence and had inquired whether he could commit such an act despite holding a residence permit.

His chat partner allegedly confirmed that he was justified in doing so.

Sulaiman A. faces charges including murder and attempted murder.

Prosecutors believe the accused holds sympathies for the Islamic State terrorist group, a claim he has corroborated in court.

It has been presented that he reached the conclusion that it was not only acceptable but also his religious duty to kill individuals he deemed infidels.

At the time of the stabbing, Sulaiman A. was living with his wife and children in Heppenheim, approximately 35 kilometers northeast of Mannheim.
