Russia Accuses Germany of Inciting War Amidst Increased Military Support for Ukraine

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov claims German Chancellor Merz's assurances compel Ukraine to continue fighting.
The Kremlin has leveled serious accusations against the German government, asserting that Chancellor Friedrich Merz's recent commitments to further military support for Ukraine, including advancements in missile production, effectively compel Kyiv to 'continue fighting'.

This assertion was made by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, who claimed that such actions jeopardize diplomatic resolutions to the conflict.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that, as demonstrated by previous tank deliveries, Germany is already directly engaged in the war.

He criticized Berlin's decisions as exacerbating tensions and expressed hope that 'responsible politicians' in Germany would recognize the gravity of the situation and work towards ending hostilities.

In response, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul refuted claims of war incitement, stating that Russia is waging an unlawful war against Ukraine.

Wadephul emphasized that Germany stands alongside Ukraine in the defense of international law, suggesting that the war could cease immediately if Russia assumes responsibility for its actions.

During a recent meeting in Berlin with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Chancellor Merz had pledged not only to construct advanced weapon systems collaboratively but also to provide an additional €5 billion in military support to Ukraine.

The funding for this assistance package comes from allocations already approved by the Bundestag, as confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Defence.

The Kremlin condemned Germany's pledge for enhanced military support as 'highly irresponsible' and an additional provocation.

Peskov remarked that he hoped Germany's position would not obstruct peace efforts in Ukraine, likening the situation to a competition with Paris as the 'most dangerous arsonist' in the process.

For over three years, Russia has engaged in a comprehensive war in Ukraine.

Despite renewed direct negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian diplomats in early May, instigated by pressure from the White House, the discussions concluded without significant outcomes, aside from a notable prisoner exchange.

Russia has rejected a ceasefire without conditions, contrasting with Ukraine's position.

According to Kremlin statements, hostilities will persist until the 'causes of the conflict in Kyiv' are resolved.

There are no indications that the Russian leadership is poised to relent on its maximalist demands, which include Ukraine's renouncement of NATO membership, the annexation of Ukrainian territories, and continued Russian influence over Kyiv’s politics.

A potential next round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine may take place again in Istanbul, as Peskov indicated a preference for Turkey to host the discussions, given its role in facilitating the initial round.
