Severe Storm Warnings Issued in Saxony Amid Heavy Thunderstorms in Germany

Severe thunderstorms, hail, and flooding pose significant risks in Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia as weather patterns disrupt normal conditions across the country.
As severe thunderstorms develop across parts of Germany, the German Weather Service (DWD) has issued warnings for the federal state of Saxony, predicting severe weather conditions that could include lightning strikes, hail, and potential flooding.

These thunderstorms are expected to escalate in intensity throughout the evening hours, touching cities such as Leipzig, Dresden, and counties including Nordsachsen, Mittelsachsen, Zwickau, Bautzen, and Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge.

The DWD cautions that citizens may face hazards such as falling trees and debris, as well as the risk of localized street flooding and aquaplaning due to heavy rainfall.

This weather event follows a pattern of unstable atmospheric conditions that have been recorded across several regions in Germany.

Meanwhile, North Rhine-Westphalia is currently experiencing its own severe weather effects.

Over the weekend, meteorologists reported over 25,000 lightning strikes recorded, with approximately 3,200 directly impacting the ground.

The city of Krefeld was notably affected, reporting significant flooding and necessitating numerous emergency service responses to reports of inundated streets and basements.

Local authorities received an overwhelming volume of inquiries as residents dealt with the aftermath of the storm.

In Erftstadt, water levels surged, prompting extensive damage, with reports indicating that the floodwaters reached heights of half a meter, invading residential properties.

Emergency services in the nearby town of Kerpen reported disruption to electrical supply, affecting approximately 500 residents.

Additionally, a substantial rainfall event saw 60 liters of rain per square meter fall within a short span in localized areas such as Herrig, substantially exceeding the average precipitation for an entire month of May. Eyewitness accounts described transformed roadways as channels for floodwaters, complicating rescue and recovery efforts.

Despite the chaotic conditions, authorities confirmed that no injuries were documented as a result of the severe weather events, although damage to vehicles and infrastructure is anticipated to be extensive.

As this series of storms continues to impact various regions, the DWD has indicated the persistence of thunderstorms with additional rounds of precipitation likely in the southern, central, and eastern regions of the country.
