The German automaker reports a substantial drop in deliveries, citing economic conditions, competition, and supply chain challenges.
Audi, the prominent German automobile manufacturer, has announced a notable decline in its global sales, reflecting broader challenges facing the automotive industry.
The company, headquartered in Ingolstadt, delivered around 200,000 fewer vehicles from its core brand in the past year.
This downturn mirrors reports from competitors such as
Mercedes-Benz, which also showcased a similar trend.
The company disclosed that worldwide deliveries amounted to 1.67 million vehicles, indicating a near 12% decrease compared to the previous year.
Within its home market of Germany, the decline was particularly pronounced, with a 21% drop.
Audi also experienced diminished sales in other key regions, including North America and China, where deliveries fell by 13% and 11% to 649,000 vehicles, respectively.
Despite the downturn, sales in Europe, excluding Germany, were slightly more resilient, with a reduction of 6% to 466,000 cars.
Moreover, the segment of electric vehicles, an area of strategic importance for the company, saw deliveries fall by 8% to 164,000 units from the previous year.
Audi has attributed these challenges to a confluence of factors including adverse economic conditions, intense market competition, and limited parts availability.
These elements have collectively contributed to the brand’s difficulties in maintaining delivery volumes.
In light of these challenges, Marco Schubert, Audi’s Head of Sales and Marketing, expressed cautious optimism regarding the forthcoming year.
He described 2024 as a 'transition year' and indicated that while the company has promising new models launching, these will only gradually impact overall volumes.
Audi's CEO, Gernot Döllner, reiterated confidence in meeting the firm's long-term goals, although no specific sales targets were disclosed.
The pressures facing Audi are not isolated.
Competitor
Mercedes-Benz recently reported a 3% drop in deliveries to 1.98 million units, which included Smart vehicles.
Similarly, Porsche, another brand within the Volkswagen Group alongside Audi, experienced a 3% fall in sales to 310,700 vehicles.
As the automotive sector continues to grapple with a volatile global market and the ongoing transition to electric vehicles, manufacturers like Audi are compelled to navigate a complex landscape of economic and logistical hurdles.
