Berlin's Waste Management Disrupted by Planned Strike

Berlin's Waste Management Disrupted by Planned Strike

Extensive disruptions expected from March 10 to March 15 due to a strike by the Verdi union affecting waste collection and recycling services.
The Berlin waste management service, Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR), is set to face significant operational disruptions next week as the Verdi union has called for extensive strike action.

From Monday, March 10, to Friday, March 14, there will be substantial limitations on street cleaning services.

Additionally, all recycling centers will remain closed from Wednesday, March 12, until Saturday, March 15, resulting in a complete halt to waste collection services during this period.

As per BSR's announcement, the consequences of the strike will be far-reaching, impacting numerous waste collection services.

The collection of residual waste and organic waste bins, as well as recycling bins under BSR's jurisdiction, will not take place, and the next collection will occur at the following regular scheduled time.

Furthermore, the bulky waste collection service is also affected; pre-arranged pickups scheduled between March 12 and March 14 will be canceled, with BSR indicating it will contact affected customers to reschedule these appointments.

Scheduled community cleanup days by BSR in the districts of Lichtenberg (March 12), Mitte (March 13), Neukölln (March 14), and Tempelhof (March 15) will not occur.

Major facilities including the Mechanical Treatment Facility at Gradestraße, the waste-to-energy plant in Ruhleben, and the biomass center in Hennickendorf will remain closed throughout the strike.

Residents of Berlin are reminded that the disposal of bulky waste, electronic waste, and other refuse in public spaces, such as outside closed recycling centers, is prohibited.

Such actions constitute illegal dumping and will be penalized with substantial fines by local authorities.

Due to the strike’s impact, the BSR service center is expected to experience a surge in call volume, leading to prolonged wait times for customer service.

However, winter maintenance services will continue as required, conducted under a contingency agreement between BSR and the unions, including Verdi and GKL.
