Bishop Christian Stäblein Critiques German Migration Policy Following Court Ruling

The Berlin Administrative Court deemed border rejections of asylum seekers unlawful, prompting calls for reform from church representatives and human rights activists.
Bishop Christian Stäblein, a prominent figure in the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), has called for a reevaluation of Germany's migration policies in light of a recent ruling by the Berlin Administrative Court.

The court declared the rejection of three Somali asylum seekers at the German-Polish border unlawful, marking a significant legal development in the country’s handling of migrants and refugees.

In remarks to the Berliner 'Tagespiegel', Bishop Stäblein emphasized the fundamental dignity of all individuals, stating, "Every person has their dignity before God.

That has always connected Europe, and we should do everything to ensure it remains so." He suggested that the ruling serves as a reminder to see every individual for who they are and not just as statistics.

The German Interior Minister, Dobrindt, has maintained a firm stance on border control, indicating that he would continue with stringent measures despite the court’s decision.

Dobrindt has expressed willingness to escalate the matter to the European Court of Justice if necessary, highlighting the ongoing tensions in how migration is managed across borders.

In response to the court ruling, the refugee organization Pro Asyl has called for an immediate halt to border rejections.

Karl Kopp, managing director of Pro Asyl, highlighted the alarming nature of the government's potential disregard for the administrative court’s findings, stating, "It is highly alarming for our rule of law that the federal government, despite decisions from the Berlin Administrative Court, wants to willfully break the law." Pro Asyl has committed to defending the rights of affected individuals, asserting its dedication to humanitarian and legal support.

Critics, including some members of the conservative Union parties, have accused Pro Asyl of dramatizing the situation, a claim that the organization has rebutted, categorizing it as a slander against its human rights advocacy.

Bishop Stäblein also commented on the situation at the German-Polish border, noting that Poland has expressed discomfort with Germany's migration strategy.

He remarked that Poland has been significantly impacted by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, welcoming a large influx of refugees and demonstrating considerable resilience in the face of these challenges.

Stäblein called for collaborative solutions among European nations to address these pressing humanitarian issues.
