Former Health Minister Jens Spahn appointed with over 90% support, succeeding Friedrich Merz.
Jens Spahn, the former German Minister of Health, has been elected as the new leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group with significant support.
In a vote held in Berlin, Spahn garnered 91.3% of the votes from fellow members, according to sources within the faction.
He succeeds Friedrich Merz, who is set to seek election as Federal Chancellor.
The election followed a proposal from Merz and CSU leader Markus Söder, both of whom endorsed Spahn for the leadership role.
In his remarks to members, Spahn emphasized the strong trust and relationship he has developed with Merz during their collaboration.
He expressed gratitude to Merz for leading the party back into government and indicated that the new administration must quickly transition into governance.
Spahn also reaffirmed the party's stance against the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, stating, "We have nothing in common with them." He clarified that there would be no recommendation for AfD representatives to be appointed as heads of committees, asserting that effective governance is the best strategy against extremism.
At 44 years old, Spahn has been a member of the Bundestag for over 20 years.
Following the Union's defeat in the 2021 elections, he served as one of the deputy leaders of the opposition parliamentary group, focusing particularly on economic policy.
His previous experience as Health Minister during the
COVID-19 pandemic and as the Parliamentary State Secretary for Finance has contributed to his governmental expertise.
However, Spahn faced criticism during the pandemic for the procurement of allegedly overpriced protective masks.
