Maja T. Announces Hunger Strike Amidst Prolonged Isolation in Hungarian Prison

The German national, accused of severe bodily harm, claims inhumane treatment while in custody and seeks legal redress.
Maja T., a suspected left-wing extremist from Germany, has announced plans to initiate a hunger strike while in isolation in a Hungarian prison.

Maja T., who identifies as non-binary, is currently facing charges of severe bodily harm related to alleged involvement in violent attacks against right-wing individuals in Budapest in February 2023. These attacks reportedly resulted in significant physical injuries, including fractures and concussions.

Having spent nearly eleven months in solitary confinement, Maja T. expressed in a written statement that they feel 'buried alive' in isolation, stating that the hunger strike is a final effort to secure a fair trial and to seek extradition back to Germany.

Concerns about the conditions of Maja T.'s detention have been raised, including reports of sleep deprivation due to hourly cell checks and inadequate hygiene.

At the beginning of the trial in February, Maja T. highlighted that not all court documents were provided in their native German, which raised issues regarding their ability to defend themselves adequately.

Maja T. was arrested in Berlin in December 2023 and subsequently extradited to Hungary in June 2024, despite an earlier ruling from the German Federal Constitutional Court that aimed to prevent such extradition.

This occurred just moments before the ruling was to take effect.

Wolfram Jarosch, Maja's father, has publicly appealed to the German government for intervention, expressing that the length of time his child has spent in isolation is tantamount to psychological torture, and calling for Maja to be returned to Germany for a fair judicial process.

Reports indicate that outside of the prison cell, Maja T. is escorted by four armed officers while restrained in handcuffs and leg irons.

The Hungarian prosecution alleges that Maja T. participated in multiple violent incidents against perceived right-wing extremists, which coincided with an event commemorating the 'Day of Honor,' a nationalistic observance held in Hungary each February that recalls military efforts during the Second World War.

Witnesses described the assault victims suffering serious injuries, with some narrowly escaping life-threatening conditions.

Legal and humanitarian organizations are closely monitoring the situation as it unfolds, raising scrutiny over human rights implications in Maja T.'s treatment and the accusations under Hungarian law.
