Major Crackdown on 'Ndrangheta Mafia Leads to Arrest of German Police Officer

A coordinated operation across Italy and Germany results in multiple arrests linked to the notorious crime syndicate.
In a significant operation against organized crime, authorities in both Italy and Germany have arrested a total of 29 individuals, including a German police officer, for allegedly supporting the 'Ndrangheta, the calabrian mafia organization.

The operation took place on a Tuesday, with 20 arrests made in Italy and additional investigations occurring in the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland.

The primary focus of the operation was in Baden-Württemberg, where searches were conducted in various locations including Stuttgart, Waiblingen, and Schorndorf, among others.

The investigations are a result of a collaborative effort between German and Italian law enforcement agencies aimed at combatting organized crime and mafia activities.

The detained German officer is suspected of having connections to the criminal network, which is noted for its extensive operations across Europe, particularly in drug trafficking.

Current reports suggest that of the 20 individuals arrested in Italy, 13 are currently incarcerated while seven are placed under house arrest, all accused of having ties to the 'Ndrangheta.

The 'Ndrangheta, recognized for its wide-ranging influence, has been described as more dangerous than other infamous Italian mafia organizations, such as the Sicilian Cosa Nostra and the Neapolitan Camorra.

It is believed to control a significant portion of the European cocaine market and operates within Germany.

According to the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior, approximately 170 individuals identified as part of various organized crime groups reside within the state.

These groups include the 'Ndrangheta, Cosa Nostra, Camorra, and Sacra Corona Unita.

The distribution of organized crime members is notably concentrated around the Lake Constance region and the Stuttgart area.

The geographical proximity to Italy, combined with the economic strength of Baden-Württemberg, allows these criminal organizations to operate not only as safe havens but also as active bases for their illicit activities.

The range of crimes associated with these groups includes food fraud, illegal drug trafficking, arms offenses, money laundering, and tax fraud.

Law enforcement authorities have indicated concerns about a significant undetected population of mafia operatives within the region.

The latest operations have been supported by the Interpol initiative known as I-CAN (Interpol Cooperation Against 'Ndrangheta), which has facilitated over 100 arrests globally since its inception in 2020. Approximately 20 countries are currently participating in this project, with Germany and Italy being the primary contributors.
