Poland's Prime Minister Criticizes German Migration Policy During Chancellor Merz's Visit

Poland's Prime Minister Criticizes German Migration Policy During Chancellor Merz's Visit

In an official meeting, Donald Tusk expresses strong opposition to proposed German migration measures, emphasizing Poland's position on border control and migrant treatment.
During an official visit by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to Warsaw, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed sharp criticism of the new German government’s migration policy.

Tusk stated, "Germany will let into its territory whom it wants.

Poland will only let into its territory whom it accepts," highlighting concerns over Germany's handling of migration and its potential impact on Poland.

The Prime Minister pointed to the establishment of the 'Dublin Center' in Eisenhüttenstadt, near the Polish border, which is aimed at expediting the return of asylum seekers to other EU states, specifically organized for transfers of migrants to Poland.

Tusk insisted that no misleading perceptions or facts should suggest that Germany would send particular groups of migrants to Poland.

Additionally, Tusk rejected the proposed tightening of border controls by Chancellor Merz, stating, "If someone introduces controls at the Polish border, Poland will also implement such controls.

In the long run, that simply makes no sense."

Tusk underscored Poland's responsibility in safeguarding the EU's external borders, alleging that the regime of Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko has deliberately been facilitating the movement of migrants from crisis regions to the EU's eastern frontier.

He urged the new German government to collaborate on securing the external borders effectively.

In response, Merz assured Poland of German support in protecting the EU's external borders, describing it as a commitment to enhance border security with better support than in previous years.

He expressed optimism about reaching "good solutions" on this issue, while also stressing the need for a joint European approach to limit illegal migration.

Merz defended the increased controls at Germany's borders but reiterated his commitment to Schengen regulations, which advocate for open borders within the EU. He acknowledged that cross-border movement is crucial for jobs and prosperity, emphasizing the shared interest of maintaining free movement within the European Union.
