Russia Launches Drone Attacks Amid Calls for Ceasefire

Despite demands for a ceasefire from Western nations, Ukraine reports ongoing Russian drone strikes, causing infrastructure damage and civilian injuries.
On the night of May 12, 2025, the Ukrainian Air Force reported the interception of 55 out of 108 Russian drones launched as part of a large-scale attack.

The strikes are said to be ongoing despite calls from Western nations for a ceasefire to facilitate peace talks.

The Ukrainian military indicated that residential buildings and transportation infrastructure have sustained damage during these nighttime assaults.

Specifically, in the southern region of Odessa, local authorities reported that one person was injured, and several residential structures were compromised.

Additionally, the state railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, announced that railway infrastructure in the eastern region of Donetsk was damaged, with an injured train conductor reported.

The company conveyed via social media that the ongoing assaults are disregarding propositions for a ceasefire.

On the diplomatic front, German Foreign Minister Johan Wadephul characterized the week as pivotal for ongoing negotiations.

He asserted that Germany expects Russia to acknowledge a ceasefire followed by a readiness to engage in discussions, noting Ukraine's willingness to pursue such negotiations.

Failure to achieve a ceasefire could result in further sanctions against Russia and new arms deliveries to Ukraine.

The Weimar Plus meeting, involving representatives from Germany, France, Poland, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, the European Union, and Ukraine, is expected to address these developments.

Prior to this meeting, leaders from Germany, France, the UK, and Poland visited Ukraine to advocate for an unconditional ceasefire lasting 30 days starting on Monday.

They emphasized that sanctions would be intensified against Moscow if these demands are unmet.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, while not directly responding to the calls for a ceasefire, proposed direct negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul.

He mentioned discussing the possibility of a ceasefire during these talks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his willingness for a direct meeting with Putin but insisted on a ceasefire starting on the mentioned date, stating he will await the Russian leader in Turkey.

Past announcements made by Putin during a military parade for "Victory Day" about a temporary ceasefire were reportedly only partially observed.

Ukrainian officials indicated there were no Russian drone attacks on Ukrainian cities during the nights of May 8, 9, and 10; however, the Russian armed forces allegedly violated their own ceasefire agreement repeatedly.

The Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha declared that this limited ceasefire was predictable and labeled it a farce, reiterating that Russian forces are still actively engaging along the entire front line.

The eastern Ukrainian region of Sumy was reportedly attacked with guided bombs despite the proclamations of a ceasefire.
