Thomas Müller to Depart Bayern Munich After 25-Year Tenure

The German football legend concludes his career at Bayern following a record of 33 trophies and 743 appearances.
Thomas Müller, a pivotal figure in Bayern Munich's illustrious history, has announced that he will depart the club at the end of the current season, culminating a remarkable 25-year association.

The 35-year-old forward joined Bayern's youth ranks in 2000 and has since played a record 743 matches, becoming one of the most successful players in the club's history with 33 major trophies during his tenure.

In a statement shared on Instagram, Müller revealed that the club had opted not to negotiate a new contract with him for the upcoming season, stating, "Even if this was not in line with my personal wishes, it is important that the club follows its convictions." He expressed his ongoing passion for the game and reflected on the enjoyment he found playing alongside his teammates.

Müller’s achievements include 12 Bundesliga titles, six German Cups, and two UEFA Champions League trophies.

Furthermore, he was part of the German national team that triumphed at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Over his career with Bayern, he has recorded 247 goals and 273 assists across all competitions, while also contributing 45 goals in 131 appearances for Germany.

Christoph Freund, Bayern's sporting director, remarked on the decision to part ways, noting, "There'll never be another one like him, that's for sure.

This decision was extremely hard, as everyone can understand." The club has planned a farewell testimonial match for Müller, with his final appearances slated for the FIFA Club World Cup this summer in the United States.

Notably, his last home game at the Allianz Arena could occur on May 10 against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga, or potentially in the Champions League final on May 31.

Speculations surrounding Müller’s departure had gained traction in recent days, with reports indicating that financial considerations played a significant role in the club's decision.

As one of Bayern’s top earners, earning above €10 million annually, his higher wages were scrutinized amid the club's financial planning.

Bayern has recently secured commitments from younger players, including Jamal Musiala, Joshua Kimmich, Manuel Neuer, and Alphonso Davies, indicating a shift towards a younger squad.

Müller's presence on the pitch has decreased in recent seasons, with many of his appearances coming as a substitute.

Max Eberl, a member of Bayern's board, confirmed the club's focus on future squad planning, stating, "Thomas knows he’s held in the highest regard at FC Bayern, and this decision doesn't change that."

The end of Müller’s tenure at Bayern marks a significant moment in the club's history, as he has exemplified loyalty and excellence throughout his career at the Bavarian powerhouse.

The club has expressed interest in retaining him in a potential future role, highlighting his enduring legacy.
