Ferda Ataman criticizes the platform for promoting right-wing extremism and urges the federal government to reconsider its presence.
In a recent call to action, Ferda Ataman, Germany's Independent Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, has urged the German government to withdraw its presence from the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
Speaking to the _ARD-Hauptstadtstudio_, Ataman emphasized that the platform has increasingly become a tool for political influence wielded by 'the richest man in the world,' a reference to its current owner,
Elon Musk.
Ataman criticized the algorithms employed by X, asserting that they amplify and support right-wing extremist expressions.
'If you consider our Basic Law or our standards for democracy and non-discriminatory discourse, it's difficult to justify a state entity maintaining a presence there,' Ataman said.
Her remarks underscored a clash between the government's digital outreach strategy and its principles of promoting informed, unbiased dialogue.
Despite Ataman's appeal, the German government has decided to remain on X for the time being.
Government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit acknowledged the feedback but argued that the potential fallout from leaving the platform could be more detrimental than beneficial.
'We must go where people seek information,' Hebestreit explained, underscoring the necessity to engage with the public on widely-used platforms, regardless of their ideological slants.
The debate over the government's role on X has reignited following controversial comments by the platform's owner.
Elon Musk recently sparked controversy by insulting German leaders, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and encouraging support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
Ataman had previously exited the platform in October 2023, calling for the government to follow suit at that time.
The discussion highlights a broader global conversation about the responsibility of governments and public institutions when utilizing platforms accused of spreading extremist content.
The German government's current stance reflects a nuanced balance between maintaining open channels for public communication and adhering to democratic values, though calls for reevaluation continue to echo in political circles.
