The U.S. seeks concessions from Ukraine's President Zelenskyy ahead of critical negotiations over resource agreements.
In a developing situation surrounding U.S.-Ukraine relations, former President
Donald Trump has intensified pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ahead of scheduled negotiations regarding a resource agreement in Saudi Arabia.
The meeting, planned for this week, was initially intended for Zelenskyy to confer with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio about a potential accord involving critical resources.
However, the U.S. administration, through National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes, has publicly expressed anticipation for ‘positive developments’ that might help bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Reports indicate that Trump is pressing not only for a comprehensive resource deal, but is also advocating for elections in Ukraine and has suggested Zelenskyy's potential withdrawal from power as part of the discussions.
This stance aligns with previous comments made by Trump's advisor
Elon Musk regarding the sustainability of Ukraine.
During an interview with Fox News, Trump remarked concerning the future of Ukraine, suggesting its survival was uncertain, reflecting a stark shift in U.S. policy and rhetoric toward the country.
This follows a history of strained relations between Trump and Zelenskyy, which include a controversial request from Trump during a previous administration for Zelenskyy to investigate alleged corruption involving Hunter Biden, the son of Trump’s political opponent
Joe Biden.
Zelenskyy’s refusal to acquiesce to this demand has been cited as a contributing factor to Trump’s political difficulties.
In a recent move, the Trump administration has curtailed U.S. aid to Ukraine, as well as restricted access to intelligence data, measures that underscore the shifting U.S. stance amid the broader geopolitical conflict.
Zelenskyy had initially proposed the resource agreement to allow U.S. companies access to vital resources required for battery technology and semiconductor manufacturing, with the understanding that the U.S. would provide security guarantees in exchange.
Proceeds from the extraction of these rare resources were intended to support the reconstruction of Ukraine.
However, this proposal is currently inactive, casting doubt on the future of U.S.-Ukrainian cooperation.
