Ukraine Conducts 'Historic' Drone Attack from Black Sea Against Russian Targets

Ukrainian Armed Forces employ new maritime drone tactics to target Russian air defense systems in occupied territories.
In a significant escalation of military tactics, the Ukrainian armed forces have utilized unmanned boats to launch drones in a 'historic' attack against Russian targets in the Black Sea region.

This marks a notable advancement in Ukraine's strategic capabilities and comes shortly after their previous success in bringing down Russian helicopters with sea-launched drones.

According to the Ukrainian Centre for Strategic Communication, located in Kyiv, the development involved deploying domestically manufactured marine drones which effectively launched First Person View (FPV) drones to strike Russian air defense systems.

These maritime UAVs were reportedly deployed to target Russian air defense units stationed in the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson, an area currently under Russian occupation.

Notably, among the targeted assets were two Pantsir-S1 air defense systems, known for their short-range capabilities, as well as an Osa-type missile system.

While reports confirm the deployment of these systems, the extent of damage or destruction remains unclear based on available Ukrainian sources.

Russian military bloggers have corroborated the use of FPV drones originating from the sea.

However, explicit details regarding the specific types of unmanned boats and FPV drones employed remain undisclosed by Ukrainian authorities.

Visual materials released suggest the involvement of the 'Magura V5', a maritime drone boasting a range exceeding 800 kilometers and capable of reaching speeds of 80 km/h.

Previously, the 'Magura V5' has been credited with damaging or sinking multiple vessels of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

In late December, the Ukrainian intelligence agency, HUR, revealed this new strategic use of sea drones.

According to HUR, a Ukrainian special forces unit successfully utilized a 'Magura V5' armed naval attack drone for the first time in history to destroy an aerial target, specifically a Russian Mi-8 helicopter, using R-73 missiles.

This development highlights the increasing reliance on unmanned aerial and maritime technology in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia as both parties strive for tactical advantage in the contested region.
