Volkswagen, Germany's iconic automotive manufacturer, has announced an extensive cost-cutting initiative that will see 4,000 managers forego bonuses, contributing to a planned €300 million reduction in salary expenditures by 2030.

This move is part of a broader fiscal restructuring, which management revealed as essential for maintaining competitive viability amidst rising production costs and increasing competition from Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.

Gunnar Kilian, Volkswagen's Chief Human Resources Officer, conveyed in a detailed interview with the 'Braunschweiger Zeitung' that the executive board will bear a disproportionate share of these cuts compared to other management levels and employees.

However, specific figures on the financial impact on the executive board were not disclosed.

There has been widespread speculation, supported by insights from the 'Handelsblatt', suggesting that the management team is set to experience an 8% reduction in annual salaries.

The adjustments focus heavily on reductions to annual bonuses for the roughly 4,000 affected managers within Germany.

This will be implemented through a tiered deduction system affecting bonuses over the fiscal years 2025 to 2029, starting from this year, with the first observed impact on bonus payouts by May 2026.

These measures were further solidified in a recent collective bargaining agreement, reached shortly before Christmas, between Volkswagen's management and employee representatives.

This deal includes employees agreeing to forego salary increases for 2025 and 2026 and underscores the intention to reduce over 35,000 positions in Germany by 2030.

Currently, the workforce at Volkswagen's six main production sites in Germany stands at less than 100,000, as confirmed by Kilian.

The overarching strategic goal is to achieve net cost savings of over €4 billion annually through these efficiency measures.

Notably, €1.5 billion of these savings are expected to result from labor cost reductions.
